You just never know what you will see when you keep your eyes open for something interesting. We spotted this little cable bridge on the side of the road while driving down the highway between Dillsboro and Cherokee. It’s just sort of a random little bridge and if you aren’t careful to take a closer look, you might think it’s abandoned and not able to be walked on. It is pretty sturdy. It looks like at the end there may have been a park at one time, but now there is a private community. Maybe once upon a time, people were able to get off the bridge and have a picnic by the river there next the railroad tracks. The GSMR tracks can be seen behind the community at the end of the bridge. While on the bridge, you have a nice view of the Tuckasegee River. The sign stamp on the bridge says it was built in 1906. I’m not sure if it was built here then or if it was moved here from some where else. If you like swinging bridges, this would be fun for you. It’s on the way into town before the big flea markets. It stands pretty tall, so you won’t miss it if you look off to the right before hitting the Tuckasegee Rafting place. I don’t remember the exact GPS coordinates, but anyone who is headed to the casino at Cherokee or to the rafting place will go by it without fail. Keep a look out if you want to have a good view on an old footbridge over the river. We encourage you all to keep an eye out for any kind of random roadside hideaway that might lead you to something beautiful! (As long as you’re not trespassing, of course).
