Mingo Falls

If you’re in Cherokee, NC, and up for a .4 mile walk UP some stairs, you’re in for a treat when you reach the top. Flowing at 140 feet, is Mingo Falls. It’s a free parking area, and you don’t have to pay a State Park fee either. Just park, and climb on up there. Please be advised, do NOT try to climb the falls. We have seen people do it, but we are here to tell you that for some, it does not end well. A couple of years ago, we were staying at a campground on Big Cove Road (where the falls in located), (also where we took the Elk pictures), but we were awakened by sirens blasting everywhere. We also saw the medi-vac helicopter. A man had fallen off the top of Mingo Falls. He did not make it, despite all the emergency efforts. So, please, for your sake, just admire the falls from the platform that is provided. There is a small area under the platform where you can wade in the cold mountain stream. For a free place to be, it’s not a bad site to behold. Just don’t use the porta john….yuck. It wasn’t maintained. It would be a great trek for anyone who wants daily exercise while in the area. Climb the stairs, bring a book, and relax on the platform for awhile, looking up at the beauty that is Mingo Falls.
